Russia Tightens Ban on Armenian Agricultural Imports

(MENAFN) According to reports, Russia has expanded its restrictions on agricultural imports from Armenia following what it described as a rise in violations detected in recent shipments.

The Russian food safety and agricultural monitoring authority Rosselkhoznadzor announced that it will prohibit imports of several Armenian products, including grapes, cherries, sweet cherries, and apricots. The new measures are set to take effect on June 2.

Authorities said the decision was taken to safeguard phytosanitary standards within Eurasian Economic Union member states and to support domestic agriculture sectors such as horticulture, fruit production, and viticulture in Russia.

The latest restrictions add to a broader set of measures that have already affected Armenian exports in recent weeks. Earlier actions included the suspension of certification for fish products intended for the Russian market, as well as bans on a range of fresh produce such as cucumbers, tomatoes, leafy greens, and strawberries.

Additional limitations have also reportedly been imposed on certain Armenian bottled goods, including mineral water under the Jermuk brand, along with specific brandy and wine labels.

Officials have attributed these successive restrictions to recurring irregularities identified in imported goods, framing the measures as necessary steps to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards in the Russian market.
