Syria Hails EU Decision to Lift Sanctions on Multiple Institutions

(MENAFN) Syria on Monday welcomed a move by the European Union to remove a number of Syrian institutions from its sanctions list, describing it as a step aligned with efforts to support the country’s political transition.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani wrote on the US social media platform X, “We welcome the European Union’s decision to lift sanctions on a number of Syrian government entities, including the ministries of interior and defense,” according to reports.

He also added, “We also appreciate the renewal of sanctions imposed on figures of the former regime and those involved in crimes against our people,” as stated by reports.

Al-Shaibani further noted that Damascus hopes to expand cooperation with EU partners in a way that strengthens reconstruction efforts and is grounded in mutual respect and shared interests, according to reports.

The European Union on Monday renewed its restrictive measures against individuals and entities linked to the former administration of Bashar al-Assad for another year, while at the same time removing several Syrian institutions from its sanctions list as part of a broader approach to support the country’s transition process.
