Provided by AGPThe drills, taking place in Belarus, are focused on covert deployment operations, long-range maneuvers, and preparing troops to conduct missile launches from unplanned locations, officials said.
The exercise involves missile units and air force components from both countries. Military personnel are reportedly training in transporting weapons systems to simulated launch areas and preparing them for potential combat use.
Belarusian authorities described the operation as “a scheduled training activity” and stressed that it “is not aimed against any third parties as well as does not pose a threat to regional security.”
Russia deployed nuclear weapons to Belarus in 2023 after repeated requests from Minsk, and later stationed its nuclear-capable Oreshnik hypersonic missile system there. Belarusian officials have cited increasing military pressure from Western countries and NATO activity near their borders as justification for strengthening defense cooperation with Moscow.
The latest exercise comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO members in Eastern Europe. Earlier this year, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said the country had little choice but to reinforce its military posture because of expanding NATO activity, particularly in neighboring Poland.
Reports in recent months also suggested that Poland and France were considering military exercises involving simulated nuclear and conventional strike scenarios linked to Russia and Belarus. Those discussions followed announcements by French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk about expanding defense cooperation in response to what they described as security threats from Russia.
Russian officials have repeatedly denied any intention to attack NATO countries and have criticized Western military expansion in Europe, arguing that increasing militarization and nuclear-related cooperation on the continent undermine regional stability.
