Provided by AGPSpeaking at the Global Partnerships Conference in London, Cooper says the global economy is being “held hostage” due to what she describes as major disruptions affecting a key international shipping route, according to reports.
She claims daily shipping traffic through the waterway has fallen sharply from around 90 vessels a day to just five over the past three months, leaving thousands of seafarers and hundreds of ships stranded.
Cooper warns that blocked shipments of fuel, gas, and fertilizer are severely affecting food production in parts of the Global South and disrupting agricultural cycles.

To address economic pressures, she announces that the UK’s British International Investment (BII) will provide more than £4.6 billion in climate-related investments aimed at supporting energy security and development in emerging markets.
