Australia, Canada Demand De-Escalation of Hostilities in Middle East
Speaking alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Canberra, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivered a pointed message to all parties involved.
"The world wants to see a de-escalation," Albanese told reporters.
His remarks came in direct response to questions over whether the regional conflict was broadening — a characterization supported by an official transcript of his comments.
Carney, who is visiting Australia as part of a three-nation Asia tour, went further, outlining the specific conditions he believes must be met before any ceasefire can take hold.
"There needs to be a de-escalation of hostilities. Right now, we have a spreading of hostilities … there needs to be the ending of targeting civilians, civilian infrastructure. Those are necessary conditions before ceasefire can exist," Carney said.
Both leaders also aligned on nuclear nonproliferation, jointly opposing any path that would see Iran acquire nuclear weapons.
The diplomatic push comes as casualties from the conflict mount sharply. US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which began Feb. 28, have killed more than 900 people — among them Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and over 165 elementary schoolgirls, according to Iranian authorities. Iran has since struck back with drone and missile attacks on US-linked targets across Gulf nations, killing at least six American service members and wounding several others.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Carney was pressed on whether the Five Eyes intelligence alliance remained relevant amid current geopolitical strains.
"There are many challenges, but there are many things that continue to function very well and the Five Eyes would be top of that list," he said.
The Five Eyes — comprising the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand — is one of the world's most expansive intelligence-sharing frameworks.
