UK PM, Trump meet to discuss endeavour to end Russia-Ukraine war
During the conversation, the two leaders exchanged views on initiatives intended to stop the fighting in Ukraine. Starmer briefed Trump on ongoing coordination among allied states working to support a potential peace agreement and to secure long-term stability.
"The Prime Minister updated on work by the Coalition of the Willing to support any peace deal and ensure a just and lasting end to the hostilities," the statement said.
The discussion followed Starmer’s role last week in jointly leading an online meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing. Participants reportedly agreed that the current period represents a decisive phase for Ukraine, its population, and the broader security architecture of the Euro-Atlantic region.
Beyond Ukraine, the two leaders also addressed developments in Gaza. Reports indicate that more than 71,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations since October 2023. Although a ceasefire came into force on October 10, Israeli forces have continued to breach its terms by restricting the entry of the agreed number of medical aid trucks, worsening what health authorities have described as an acute and ongoing medical crisis.
Starmer also informed Trump about the recent appointment of a new British ambassador to Washington, Christian Turner, noting that the move is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties between the United Kingdom and the United States.
Turner was formally named to the post last Thursday, replacing Peter Mandelson, who was dismissed in September following controversy linked to his past associations with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
