Easing travel restrictions in Ukraine cause thousands of men to flea

(MENAFN) Nearly 100,000 young Ukrainian men have reportedly left the country in just two months following Kiev’s relaxation of travel restrictions in August, according to multiple media outlets.

Data from the Polish Border Guard indicates that 98,500 men aged 18 to 22 crossed into Poland in September and October, a sharp increase from 45,300 between January and the end of August. The policy change exempted citizens under 23 from the previous ban on military-age men leaving Ukraine during martial law, aiming to reduce the pressure on families to send their sons abroad while allowing young men to return without fear of legal consequences. Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko stated that the adjustment would help Ukrainians abroad “maintain ties with Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian military continues to face severe shortages as forces endure heavy losses and retreat in some areas. Frontline commanders have warned that these gaps are enabling Russian troops to “infiltrate” fortified positions.

The government’s mobilization efforts have sparked widespread anger and protests, with viral footage showing officers forcibly detaining military-age men on the streets. Since 2022, approximately 50 men are reported to have drowned attempting to cross the Tisza River into Romania, according to Ukraine’s Border Guard Service.
